Chris Schlarb

edited June 2011 in Ambient
I was originally clued in to Chris's music on the Bandcamp thread (can't remember who posted it originally), for an album called Twilight & Ghost Stories. I just went over to Chris's site, figuring I'd shoot him an email and see if he wants to do something with the AAJ dotd feature on our Saturday The Fringes night. That's when I saw his new album "Psychic Temple". I'm listening to it now on his site...

It is scary good. Sending fucking chills up my spine as I listen, it is. You should see the line-up of musicians he collaborates with. Of jazz note, Kris Tiner, an excellent trumpet player, and Dave Easley, who plays steel pedal on Brian Blade albums.

Listen listen listen. This is so damn brilliant.

  • Yeah, brilliant indeed !
It was Bad Thoughts posting it on the I Heart Lung and related. . . thread.
    - And the album that was albumpriced in Europe. I complained about this @ my infamous Scheisse ! thread on the other board.
It has recently changed to trackpricing. I grabbed it just 2 days ago for 1,96 euros.

  • I wasn't aware at the time I started this thread how well known he was and how highly regarded. I thought he was still just this lonesome musician who made this sublime ambient album with found sounds and inspiration. He has a lot of heavy dudes from rock, classical, and jazz all wanting to work with him and he's gotten some serious write-ups in serious publications. He's in danger of becoming one of those auteur savants like Tom Waits or Brian Wilson. Maybe he's at the Mark Linkous level right now.

I'm checking out some of his other Bandcamp albums right now. He's pretty much my favorite musician right now. I wrote him an email inviting him to participate with the AAJ dotd, but I'm pretty sure I came off sounding like a raving fanboy, lol. I never should've contacted him after the way Psychic Temple affected me. That album almost inspired me to take another shot at writing reviews again. Almost.

It would be nice if someone who had admin functionality could merge the two threads... this one and BN's I Heart Lung (and related) thread.

    Cheers.
  • - Thanks Jonah, and yes a merge seems like the right thing to do.

    Still at Npr:

    - "Psychic Temple, led by band/cult leader Chris Schlarb and featuring Mike Watt (Minutemen), Sheridan Riley (Avi Buffalo), Paul Masvidal (Cynic, Death), jazz trumpeter Kris Tiner and more, has reimagined Brian Eno's 1979 ambient landmark Music For Airports. The group's own version of "Music for Airports 1/1" was recorded in one afternoon, live in the studio without headphones, overdubs, edits or effects.

The album's flip side features the fiery original "Music for Bus Stops," conceived as a working class commentary on Eno's preferred method of transportation.

From Greg Burk’s liner notes: "Psychic Temple approaches Airports from a fresh angle, rescuing it from its 'dark, boring fate' of becoming a museum piece to be analyzed by select musicians inside expensive concert halls. Where Eno's distant, static masterpiece doesn't seem to fit the real-life chaos of what goes on in an airport, Psychic Temple's version adds a human touch and a dose of reality, showing that we're all in it together, we can make room for one another, and we're calm."

    - There's a 20:42 Alternate take of Music for Airports 1/1 on the Emusic version.

  • Thanks for the reminder. Most of his library is on the broken hard drive so it's great to be able to add something new.

  • I don't typically use eMusers as a detour to posts on my own site, but I'll make an exception from time to time...

Here's a post I made that compiled all of his on-the-road tweets from his last tour...

    http://www.birdistheworm.com/things-i-love-about-twitter-chris-schlarbs-making-the-saint-tour/

Schlarb has a style of tour-tweeting very much like Ken Vandermark.

Also, here's my write-up for Psychic Temple's "Plays Music for Airports," in which I talk about inspired jazz covers of pop songs, Brian Eno, and Clark Terry's "Serenade to a Bus Seat"...

    AND... he's currently on tour...

Shit, I didn't realize he was coming through Kentucky this weekend.  He'll be at Schuba's (for you Chicago people) pretty soon.
